Example 1:

Consider our answer is 47.68472195 but we are asked to give a shorter answer – correct to 2 significant figures. Here the result have 8 figures following the decimal point.

our ‘cut-off point’ comes after the ‘8’  47.68 | 472195

This number is more than 47.68, but less than 47.69. Which is it closer to?

Look at the 3rd number after decimal point, that is number after that ‘cut-off point’.

If the number is 0,1,2,3, or 4 round DOWN to 47.68

If the number is 5,6,7,8, or 9 round UP to the next number 47.69.

Ans:
  47.68 to 2 significant figures.

Example 2:

Give 13.378912 correct to 3 significant figures.

Look at the FOURTH figure after the decimal point: 13.378 |  912

The figure after the ‘cut-off point’ is a ‘9’

So round the number UP.

Ans:  13.379 to 3 significant figures.

Example 3:

Give 42.378212 correct to 3 significant figures.

Look at the FOURTH figure after the significant figures: 42.378 |  212

The figure after the ‘cut-off point’ is a ‘2’

So round the number UP.

Ans:  42.378 to 3 significant figures.
